DownCleaning: Managing Textile Renewal

There is a saying that goes, “We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our future generations.” Sustainability should be a non-negotiable principle when it comes to the consumption of natural resources. Focusing on sustainable living involves being more mindful of the choices we make. Despite our continuous growth, we need to recognize the impact our activities have on the planet and make choices that ensure a sustainable future.

As an industry, textiles have a significant impact on a country’s economy, and they are an indispensable part of our daily lives. The textile industry also facilitates a wide range of sectors that substantially depend on textiles for their products. Bedding is one of the many industries reliant on textiles for their goods.

An estimated 10 million tonnes of textile waste end up in US landfills every year. With Downcle, we are taking a step toward managing textile renewal and highlighting the value of reusable down-filled bedding products, one down comforter at a time!

Managing Textile Waste With Downcle

Downcle is a revolutionary step towards reviving your favorite down-filled bedding products. Our expertise in quality bedding and passion for the environment has motivated us to find ways to procure used down, recycle, and reprocess it. This results in equally warm and comfortable recycled bedding products, so that you can indulge in a luxurious sleeping experience every night.

While keeping hygiene, safety, and comfort in mind, we have defined a process that follows an elaborate manufacturing process to ensure that bedding products with recycled down retain every bit of goodness that virgin down bedding products provide. Additionally, we strongly believe in sustainable consumption of resources and always look for ways to give back to the planet.

Procuring Used Down

In 2018, we started a recycled-down program. Our journey towards reviving used down began by selling recycled down as raw material to some European bedding companies, who would turn it into fresh, reusable down bedding. We have a two-pronged system to procure used down for Downcle. The first method is to collect it directly from customers regularly. The second method is to approach companies specializing in collecting discarded home textile products. These organizations follow an intricate process to sort the recycled down before making it available commercially to bedding companies. The down is usually sorted in terms of species (Goose down, Duck down) and colors (white down, gray down). We carefully procure and process recycled down to ensure adequate insulation and hygienic conditions.

The Future of Sustainable Bedding

The growing awareness of depleting resources has caused more and more people to adopt sustainable consumption practices. As a result, people are increasingly inclined to repurpose, recycle, and upcycle products that are viable enough to use for an extended time. Downcle’s current samples indicate that 95% of the whole product is made with recycled material, including sustainable fibers, lining, feather fill, polyester fill, zipper, and thread. As part of our effort to introduce sustainable solutions for rising textile waste, we recycled about 29 tons of down in the year 2020 and 133 tons since 2021.

In creating Downcle, we aim to redirect precious used down from landfills into reusable, viable products that provide warmth and comfort to you and your loved ones. Down as a filling is exceptionally durable and resilient, which is why it’s possible to revitalize used down into filling that doesn’t compromise comfort or quality. The procured down is chemically and thermally disinfected, which means that the down that reaches your home is of the highest quality.

From Trash to Treasure

Transforming to a more sustainable way of life may be challenging, but the results are truly rewarding. The idea of green textile and introducing sustainable materials to the production process can truly help reduce our combined environmental footprint. In addition to reducing landfill waste, textile renewal reduces water and energy consumption. Reusing virgin fibers and fill helps you lead an animal-friendly life while instilling the idea of recycling into the coming generations. Downcle’s recycled down filled bedding products are GRS (Global Recycled Standard) and OEKO-TEX certified, and use green technology to ensure a minimal carbon footprint.

Create warm companions out of textile trash that can be handed down from generation to generation, with Downcle.
